And it doesn’t make them any less cool. Or sold out.
This year, Balenciaga and Demna Gvasalia became synonymous with cool and crazy and ugly (the good kind) sneakers. The iconic French label has always been a favorite among the highest of high fashion set, but there is no denying that Gvasalia’s direction has pushed Balenciaga to uncharted territory (one that fuses old world luxury with of-the-moment ideas). Between the brand’s extra-chunky Triple S sneakers and the futuristic Speed Trainer, Balenciaga has wooed a new audience of Millenial sneakerheads that don’t fit the mold of the typical, older luxury consumer. And now, one of those sneakers—the Speed Trainer—is getting a new upgrade: laces.
True to Gvasalia’s “turn it up to 11” aesthetic, the sock sneaker pairs a clean, white upper with a black rubber sole—and then cranks things up with the added flair of neon yellow laces. The combination of the streamlined silhouette and bold laces make for eye-catching footwear that’s out there, but not so much so that you can’t sport it with most Balenciaga-friendly threads. If you’re a fan of the Speed Trainer’s comfy and flexible fit, don’t worry: the revamped sneaker still has the same elastic knit body as the original, making the laces just for show. That is, the kind of show that makes all the difference.
Did the original Speed Trainer need neon shoelaces? Of course not, but that’s part of Gvasalia’s creative charm. He has the uncanny ability to use brash design elements and still create a great-looking product that fashion diehards and hypebeasts will happily pay top dollar for. The laceless Speed Trainer is everywhere right now, so if you’re looking for a way to stand out from the pack: get a laced-up pair. It’s bound to turn some heads and make for some flex-worthy Instagrams.
$695, currently sold out at Saks Fifth Avenue but expect a wider release soon.
